How to repair nvidia chip in any laptop

Some HP/Compaq laptops have a know problem with the NVIDIA chip failure.
Because of overheating the GPU chip separates from the motherboard and the laptop loses video.

Here are some of the affected models:

HP Pavilion dv2000
HP Pavilion dv6000
HP Pavilion dv9000
HP Pavilion tx1000 Tablet PC
and some other models.

Some symptoms of failed NVIDIA chip:
- distorted/garbled image on intenal and external screens.
- no video at all.

First, make sure to visit NVIDIA settlement website and check if your laptop listed in there. There is a chance to get a new replacement laptop.

If your laptop is not listed or for some reason doesn't qualify for the replacement, it's possible to fix failed NVIDIA chip at home.

1. Remove motherboard from the laptop. Disassembly published in service manuals you can get from HP website.
2. Apply some liquid flux under the failed NVIDIA chip (optional step but recommended). Video tutorial for fluxing the chip.
3. Protect rest of the motherboard with aluminum foil.

3. Heat up NVIDIA chip with a heat gun.
Keep Ecoheat EC-100 heat gun about 1 inch away from the chip for about 50 seconds. Use slow speed (position 1 on the switch).

4. Let the motherboard cool down.
5. Assemble and test the laptop.
